Abhaneri Step well & Temple

By Car Full Day

The initial name of Abhaneri was Abha Nagri, which meant “City of Light.” But since there was mispronunciation of the name, the name was finally modified. Today, Abhaneri is an archeological site and attracts tourists worldwide.
It is because of the presence of ‘Baoris‘ or step wells that Abhaneri stands out among other cities. They are man-made water structures, where water can be stored. In times of drought, people can use the water that is kept in such reservoirs. Chand Baori is one of the most visited wells in Abhaneri, and it happens to be one of the deepest and largest in all of India. There are three staircases through which one can get down to the water. They are further subdivided into stories. It is near the temple of Harshat Mata.

Harshat Mata Temple, built in the honor of the deity Harshat Mata, works as another tourist attraction in Abhaneri. The temple was destroyed when India was invaded by Islamic conquerors during the 10th century; however, the ruins of this temple have retained the architectural and sculptural styles of ancient India. Harshat Mata is believed to be the deity of joy and happiness. It is also believed that the deity Harshat Mata is always happy, and she gives happiness to all villagers.
